Sustainability in Healthcare:

eLearning Programme for the Mater Private Network

EcoVerify supported the Mater Private Network in the rollout of EcoVerify’s Sustainability in Healthcare eLearning Programme, designed to strengthen sustainability knowledge and capability across all levels of the organisation. This industry-leading training promotes environmental awareness, encourages meaningful action, and reinforces the healthcare sector’s role in driving sustainability.

Scope

The EcoVerify Sustainability in Healthcare eLearning Programme was rolled out to support the Mater Private Network’s commitment to embedding sustainability into daily operations across all departments. It provided accessible, role-relevant education for both clinical and non-clinical staff, ensuring a consistent baseline of sustainability awareness throughout the organisation.

Programme Overview

The eLearning programme was delivered through six expertly developed modules, each addressing key sustainability dimensions within the healthcare context:

  • Module 1: Sustainability in Healthcare – A Call to Action
Introduces the critical role private hospitals play in advancing sustainability, outlining the environmental, social, economic, and governance responsibilities of the sector. It highlights the risks of inaction and positions sustainability as a core strategic priority.
  • Module 2: Frameworks for Action – Governance and CSRD in Sustainable Healthcare
Provides an overview of the regulatory landscape, with a focus on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Participants learn how governance frameworks support compliance and help position hospitals as sustainability leaders.
  • Module 3: Environmental Perspective – Understanding Sustainability in Healthcare
Examines the environmental challenges specific to healthcare, including emissions, waste, and resource consumption. It presents innovative tools and practical strategies to reduce environmental impact while enhancing operational performance.
  • Module 4: Social and Governance Perspective – Challenges and Solutions
Explores how hospitals can contribute to social well-being through education and equitable care, while also building strong governance structures. The module addresses ethical supply chains, compliance, and the development of impactful policies.
  • Module 5: Sustainability at Mater Private Hospital – Part I
Highlights real-world examples of environmental sustainability in practice at Mater Private Hospital, showcasing emissions reduction strategies, integrated sustainability initiatives, and climate action leadership.
  • Module 6: Sustainability at Mater Private Hospital – Part II
Focuses on the hospital’s social and governance commitments, including ethical conduct, stakeholder engagement, and programmes that enhance community health and resilience.

The Results

The Sustainability in Healthcare eLearning programme successfully delivered a high-quality, engaging learning experience that resonated across the Mater Private Network’s workforce. Staff reported increased confidence in understanding sustainability issues and how they intersect with healthcare delivery. Completion rates exceeded expectations, with particularly strong engagement from both clinical and support services teams. The inclusive design of the programme—featuring culturally sensitive content, practical examples, and clear messaging—fostered meaningful reflection and encouraged practical, workplace-specific actions. The collaboration with EcoVerify not only supported the organisation’s sustainability goals but also reinforced its leadership role in Ireland’s transition to more responsible healthcare practices.
