Independent assurance under Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive

Companies face a challenge in keeping up with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), introduced in 2023, represents a major step forward in ESG reporting, steering EU businesses toward a more sustainable future.

What is CSRD?

Large corporations are required by European Union law to report on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Substituting the EU’s Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), the CSRD will mandate more thorough ESG reporting guidelines for many businesses, both inside and outside the EU.

The purpose of the CSRD is to give stakeholders and investors the information they need to understand the risks associated with making investments in sustainability challenges, such as climate change. It also encourages transparency in revealing how businesses affect society and the environment.

Who must comply?

As the former Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) is phased out, companies operating in the EU are now required to declare their sustainability performance.

The requirements for organisations are based on number of employees and revenue. Although smaller businesses are exempted from complying with CSRD, technically speaking it is still possible for those participating in a supply or value chain to fall under the scope of the directive.

Who should perform the independent assurance of CSRD, ESRS and double materiality assessment?

An independent third party, accredited by a proper Accreditation Body, can verify the CSRD and ESRS report and perform the independent assurance, limited or reasonable resulting in an Assurance Opinion about the sustainability disclosure of the company.

EcoVerify can support your journey executing your independent assurance process.
